Monumental Changes for Women's Football

November 5, 2023

With women’s football becoming the fastest growing sport in the world, we are beginning to see gender inequality in sport loosening and slowly disappearing, however there is still a long way to go.

That being said, in recent weeks we have seen two monumental announcements come from both the FA and US Women’s soccer. ‍ The U.S. Women’s soccer team have reached a landmark agreement with their governing body to end a 6-year legal battle over equal pay. A settlement of $24 million has been reached between the U.S. Women’s soccer team and the U.S. Soccer Federation following an Employment Opportunity Commission complaint filed by a group of five of the U.S. Women’s National Team over unequal pay and treatment.‍ The terms of the settlement include equal pay for men and women in the future in all friendlies and tournaments, including the World Cup.

This announcement is a huge step in the right direction for women’s football and a huge accomplishment for the team themselves. ‍Furthermore, the Football Association has just announced that the Women’s FA Cup will receive a huge prize money increase next season. The total for the Women’s FA Cup will increase to £3 million from £300,000 in the 2022/23 season. It has also been announced that a disproportionate amount will go into the early rounds. This is so more money can be invested into the early rounds of the competition, to successfully support clubs further down the pyramid and to make sure they feel the benefit. ‍ It’s clear that women’s soccer and football continue to grow and improve year by year, with these announcements being the biggest we’ve seen in a while, but we hope this isn’t the end of the good news for gender inequality in sport. We hope that boundaries continue to be broken and women in sport keep using their voice to fight for their rights – and we want to help them! We Stand as One aim to intervene and challenge the current gender inequality issues in all sports and ultimately help to end them.
